How to stop annoying beep sounds on Polycom Phones (voice mail notification)

On Polycom phones, when someone leaves a voice mail, users are notified by three different ways.

  1. The light on top of the phone blinks
  2. Dial tones changes to shorter beeps
  3. Phone emits an annoying beep sound

These settings are ok if the phone is used in an enclosed office space. But in an open office space, where there are number of Polycom phones, these beeps annoy everyone in the office.  There is no easy way to turn off the beeps from the UI. You need to make the following change to the sip.cfg file and re-upload it to the phones.

Search for the following text in sip.cfg

se.pat.misc.1.inst.1.type=”chord”
se.pat.misc.1.inst.2.type=”chord”
se.pat.misc.1.inst.3.type=”chord”

and replace it with

se.pat.misc.1.inst.1.type=”silence”
se.pat.misc.1.inst.2.type=”silence”
se.pat.misc.1.inst.3.type=”silence”

Upload the new sip.cfg file and reboot the phone. There would be no more annoying beeps.
