Integrating Office 365 Exchange Online & Unified Messaging with VOIP Connections Hosted Lync for Enterprise Voice

If your Office 365 account is using Exchange 2010 Online, then follow these steps. For users on Exchange 2013 online, follow this blog.

Follow these steps to integrate Office 365 Exchange Online & Unified Messaging with VOIP Connections Hosted Lync for Enterprise Voice.

  1. Within your company, identify the number of users who need phone lines
  2. Sign up for Office 365
  3. You might want to customize default Office365 domain as yourdomain.com
  4. Create required users
  5. Please send us First & Last name and Email address of the E4 plan users
  6. Update DNS records
    1. In addition to DNS changes required for email and SharePoint, you need to make the following changes for Lync
      Type Host name Points to address TTL
      A sip.yourdomain.com 208.115.111.229 1 Hour
      A lyncdiscover.yourdomain.com 208.115.111.228 1 Hour
      Type Service Protocol Port Weight Priority TTL Name Target
      SRV _sip _tls 5061 1 100 1 Hour yourdomain .com sip.yourdomain.com

  7. We need to now disable Lync Online for E4 users. If all users in the company need phone lines, we can disable Lync Online for everyone (refer 7b to disable companywide). If only selected users require Enterprise voice, then disable Enterprise for them as follows.
    1. Login to Office365 control panel, Click ‘Users’, select required user and ‘Uncheck’ Lync Online.

      You can also check list of Office 365 Lync Online users on the ‘Lync Online Control Panel’. If you are enabling Lync Enterprise Voice for all users then this list should be empty.

    2. If you want to disable Lync Online for everyone in the company, then follow these steps.

      Under Management, Domain, click ‘Active’ next to your customized domain.

Now we have disabled Lync Online, let us enable ‘Unified Messaging’ on Office 365.

  1. Sign onto portal, Under Admin Overview, Exchange, click ‘Manage’
  2. Under ‘Phone & Voice’, ‘UM Dial Plans’, click ‘New’. Give a name to the UM Dial plan and enter values for other fields as follows. Enter your appropriate Country Code and Click Save.

  3. Under ‘Users & Groups’, Mailboxes, Select a User and click ‘Details’. Scroll down and click ‘Phones & Voice Features’, click Unified Messaging and enable it.

  4. For UM mailbox policy, click ‘Browse’ and select policy just created and click ‘Save’.

  5. Next enable Unified Messaging for all Users using the same steps.

This completes Exchange Online and Unified Messaging integration with VOIP Connections Hosted Lync.

Next step is validation.

  1. Login onto Office 365 email portal as the user and you will immediately notice ‘Status’ of contacts under Contacts.

  2. When someone leaves a voice mail on Lync, it will appear as email and transcribed by Unified Messaging.
